Lighthouse Keeper Eric Castrobran joined the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1987. Eric has trained in various aspects of boating safety including being qualified as crew and coxswain, communications, weather, navigation, and vessel examiner among many other qualifications and certifications. Eric is certified by the Coast Guard as a Minor Aids to Navigation Technician and is a graduate of the Coast Guard's Lighthouse Technician School in Yorktown, Virginia. Eric has received numerous citations, commendations and awards from both the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, including appointment by the Coast Guard Auxiliary as Auxiliary Lighthouse Keeper. In 1992 after becoming a member of the Coast Guard's Aids to Navigation Team, Eric with the help of some fellow Auxiliarists took on the task of renovating and restoring Point Vicente to her former glory after some years of disrepair. He has opened the lighthouse to monthly tours to the public every month and to school and special private tour venues. Since 1992, he has welcomed over 300,000 visitors to the lighthouse.
